Hong Kong Egg Pudding

Australia Dairy Co. 47 – 49 Parkes Street, Kowloon, Hong Kong

After our trip to Singapore, Mr Mi and I decided to head over to Hong Kong for a few days. Well, why not? We stayed in the Kowloon district near Yau Ma Tei MTR station and on our first morning decided to head over to a place that one of our friends had recommended to us. We weren’t sure if we were at the right place, but given the long line of people we figured this must be the spot. Do not be deterred by the length of the line as it moves very quickly. In no time at all, we were sitting at a communal table opposite another couple, faced with a non-English menu and a tiny bit concerned as to how or more importantly what we were going to order.

Luckily, the couple sitting beside us very kindly explained the menu to us and helped us to order the breakfast set. Phew! Looking around it seemed as though everyone had ordered the same thing. The breakfast set consists of a bowl of macaroni in a light broth with thinly sliced ham placed on top (a little bit different to what I would normally expect for brekky) and two pieces of thick buttered white toast (crust off) with some absolutely scrumptious creamy scrambled eggs. All of this for only HK$26 or HK$30 with a cup of tea (about A$3 – 4)! This was all very tasty and good value, although I still didn’t quite understand why this place was so popular.

Enter the steamed egg pudding (top image). The couple sitting opposite us (by this stage it was a different couple) told us that this place had the best egg/milk pudding in Hong Kong. Now I understand. I would describe this egg pudding as an Asian version of crème caramel or crème brulee. It is ever so soft and silky with subtle hints of ginger and just melts in your mouth. You can order it hot or cold, I definitely recommend the hot version it’s simply divine and so delicious! There is also a milk pudding, if you don’t fancy egg or ginger. This little bowl of goodness will only set you back HK$20. Brekky for two = HK$72 (under A$10). I’m extremely full and satisfied. Mi xo

P.S. This cafe has a very high turnover rate, it's not the type of place you would go to sit and have a relaxing meal. So be prepared to order, eat, pay and leave.
